Students at David Livingstone School along with Mosaic Artist Ursula Neufeld created
this Mural about Truth and Treaty. This was the school's response to the Truth and
Conciliation Committee's call to action. It was unveiled to the public on May
31st.
For the past three years the school and students have been looking for ways to understand
Truth and Reconciliation. The initial response was a written treaty and code of conduct
incorporating the Seven Sacred Teachings rendered into a visual design installed on the
wall at the interior front entrance of the school.
The idea that followed was to take this written code of conduct and transforming it into a
beautiful, long-lasting mosaic. Talitha Kaethler, the integrated art teacher, was the
guiding force behind this. The students learned to use tools to cut tiles into shape, how to
attach pieces with mortar and how to make a border. The project took roughly a month to
complete.
This Project was made possible with an $11,000 grant from Winnipeg Foundation.
