On June 30, 2018 was the Art City Parade at 3 pm which ended at the Broadway
Community Centre where the new skatepark was officially opened and the new Art City
mural was commemorated. I touched base with artists Jean Borbridge and Patrick Skene
about the project::
Jean Borbridge: "The painting of this Mural was in May. For a design we had a loose
idea of of a Block Party but we wanted to wait for the Art City participants and
Broadway Community Centre to incorporate their ideas. We always kept things open so
we could put their ideas in there."
Patrick Skene: "It was not just kids who worked on the Mural but community members
of varying ages. We did a lot of workshop hours with the kids generating the basic idea.
(As Jean said) additional ideas also influenced the end resulting look of the Mural. It's
always different having a collaboration with many hands than painting by yourself. I'm
happy with it. It looks great."
"We spent so much time here, It was nice to see how this new skateboard park has gotten
lots of use already. It was nice to see how the skateboarders and the young kids interact.
Most of the skateboarders come here from outside this neighbourhood. There's a nice
connection between the two groups- like seeing the older kids helping the younger ones
and maybe teaching them tricks. This skate park is great for the neighbourhood."
