Sarah Collard: "This is Portage Avenue, looking East from Hargrave, 1915. These busy streets host much activity from walking, taking the tram, riding in a car to working, making business deals or going for a leisure stroll. The streets have no limits, but seem to be congregating places for social interactions. Cars, people and trams all intertwine. One recognizable business is the Argue McLean Parlors."

"This was the first of the four transit controller boxes that I tackled in 2008. I knew I would be fighting the weather (It was October) and time would be limited so I developed a method of doing the drawings at night in my studio and transferring them onto the boxes during daylight hours. I enjoyed getting there early in the morning and if the weather permitted I had lunch in Portage Place mall. It took me the morning to trace my drawings onto the box and then by the afternoon I could enjoy the process of applying paint. If I worked a full 8 hour day, it would have taken me 2 days, but the cold got to me and a good day was 6 hours and sometimes only 4 depending on weather. I purchased a large flat brush from Colours Art and Framing that helped me get straighter lines faster. This was nice for the buildings. I also used glaze to add shading at the end."
