80 Churchill Drive
The artwork for the Manitoba Canoe and Kayak Center was rendered by Chris Velasco in 2003. This river facing wall was painted over first in about 2015; but the artwork in photo 2 (west wall) remained- but within 2 years large wire cages were built here to house racks of canoes and kayaks which obscured the artwork. By 2018 the artwork had essentially disappeared. Original notes follow:
Chris Velasco: "I liked working on it and actually quite happy with that one. I used a
spray gun for pretty much the whole wall. It's fairly rough stucco though, and it sucked
up a lot of paint. The client wanted a scene that goes along with what they do there
seasonally; the whole cross-country skiing scene, recreational canoeing, kayaking and
Dragon boat events and to advertise their Team Manitoba. It's a recreational look and
done in a line art style and I used a lot of bright colours to bring the building out. And it
looks really good from across the river from Lyndale. The clients have been very good
and flexible. They had a real graffiti problem there before the Mural."
