Each year, we lose some good outdoor art in Winnipeg. For the year indicated, here's a last look at, a last goodbye to some of the artwork that has disappeared that year.

Osborne Underpass (3)

In 2006, additional funding allowed for the extension of the original 2003 scene on both ends. The extensions were rendered by Mandy van Leeuwen.

This rendering was by Mandy van Leeuwen and Jennifer Johnson Pollock in 2003. It was one of four 2003 Mural installations intended as beautification of the underpass with meaningful historical artwork. Sponsors of the overall project were: Take Pride Winnipeg!, City of Winnipeg, CN Rail, Pem-Brand, McDonald's, South Osborne Beautification Committee, Manitoba Hydro, Red River COOP, Golden Rule Seniors, IBEX Payroll Services, Lord Roberts Community Centre, St. Mary's Nursery & Garden Centre, Province of Manitoba. In 2017 the installation came down and was replaced with Canada 150 banners.
Original notes follow:

Mandy van Leeuwen: "This section of Osborne had been subject to frequent graffiti tagging. It was thought that this would be a good place to have a group of four Murals installed with interrelated theme or themes by different Winnipeg artists and a different look for each wall. For each of the four Murals the artists were given a season of the year and a mode of transportation in the South Osborne's history. We were given summer and the streetcar. The setting of the scene is the 1910 era and that is reflected in the apparel of the figures. Some of the figures were inspired by photos we had found, including that of the policeman. It shows the streetcar that ran from the downtown across the bridge into Osborne and Osborne South. It's a cheerful, colourful scene; everyone is pretty happy enjoying a nice summer day. It's not a completely realistic scene; rather we were experimenting with this colourful whimsical look."

Jennifer Johnson Pollock: "We did this in the studio. We started it in January 2003. Mandy came up with the concept for this one. It was really fun working with human figures and having expressions on the faces and putting some life into them. The lady with the green dress looks like a jolly soul. For the three women on the right hand side we actually took their poses from a picture of women's suffragettes marching. The little girl holding the cat resembles Shirley Temple. The general idea is that they're all waiting for the streetcar to arrive. They're all having so much fun with the nice day."
