Each year, we lose some good outdoor art in Winnipeg. For the year indicated, here's a last look at, a last goodbye to some of the artwork that has disappeared that year.

Portage Avenue & Balmoral Street

   Royalty is the theme of this beautifully painted traffic controller box at the corner with Balmoral (the name reminiscent of Balmoral Castle). There are renderings of Queen Victoria (left) and the Queen Mother. The artwork was actually done in 2003, but the box itself didn't hit the street until March, 2005. By 2012 the artwork had significantly deteriorated on the box, with substantial portions having peeled off.
Original notes follow:===

   Tom Andrich: "This box is adjacent to Balmoral Rd which is reminiscent of Balmoral Castle. I wanted something representing the Royal family without the putting Queen Elizabeth, the present Queen in there. I thought that using the Queen Mother instead was a better choice. And Queen Victoria had a lot to do with how the downtown was developed in the sense of the Brit's being here, the way they set up the downtown and the businesses it was mostly the Brits that control the businesses and had a lot to do with the Victorian era."
