Each year, we lose some good outdoor art in Winnipeg. For the year indicated, here's a last look at, a last goodbye to some of the artwork that has disappeared that year.

590 St. Mary's Road

The rendering for Miller's Meat Market was done by James Culleton in 1996; with sponsorship by Manitoba Pork and Manitoba Chicken. The building underwent extensive renovations in 2009 and this wall was painted over with a new Mural.

Original notes follow:

Cameron Miller (proprietor): "It was my idea to get a Mural done; and we were probably the first ones in this area of Old St. Vital to get one. The artist, James came up with some good ideas, and we said 'sure, go with it!' The Abbey Road thing was his, and the Humphrey Bogart thing on the corner was his, too. And my kids are on the wall! So is my dog, and some of my employees. I was happy with it. For what he charged, it was a good deal. James did a good job."

James Culleton: "The Miller's Meat mural was a harmonizing of ideas, the ideas of my friends, family, and the Miller family. The Humphrey Bogart was for my brother, and the Beatles were for my friend Darryl. Then you add the Miller family (not to forget their dog), some sausages and voila! The only hiccup in the whole event was when someone spray painted the slogan 'Stop Eating Animals Meat is Murder'. Luckily, I still had all my colors mixed and the repair went smoothly. I suppose if Miller's was a photocopy place it may have said 'Stop Killing Trees, Paper is Murder'!!!

(Ed. Note: James was kind enough to provide me with an original photo of the Mural after it had been tagged, it case I wanted to use it as part of the story. I decided against it, only so as not to give the tagger an audience, but am grateful to James to have it.)
