Mural of the Year 2018    Alex Morrison (ED, Transcona BIZ): "This stunning Mural is by artist Mike Johnston who created a modern interpretation of traditional Ukrainian themes. With bold colours and outstanding details, this work on the east wall of Sevala's Ukrainian Deli, 126 Victoria Ave. W. represents the courage and determination of all entrepreneurs and business owners everywhere. It recognizes the strong Ukrainian heritage of Transcona as well as becoming a beacon for the streetscape. The Mural depicts a bejeweled young Ukrainian woman wearing a traditional head wreath, called a vinok, made of flowers, grains and grasses. Multi-coloured ribbons attached to the back of the wreath blow in the wind. Sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine, and poppies (which grow in abundance there) complement the beauty of the wreath. A suitable Ukrainian theme for a Ukrainian Deli.

Mike Johnston: "The Mural celebrates strength, confidence, empowerment and beauty."
